    The debate is settled less on comfort than on what each solution demands of the rest of the van.

    • Gas — unbeatable energy density and total independence from the battery bank: a 450 g canister covers on the order of ten hot meals. In return, it requires permanent low-level ventilation and serious checking of fittings — carbon monoxide gives no warning.
    • Induction — no combustion on board, hence no CO risk and no flame-borne condensation. But a hob draws around 2 kW: that assumes a properly sized inverter, a lithium bank and wiring able to take the surge. In practice, induction is not added to an existing installation — it is decided upstream.
    • Both — the most common setup among full-timers: induction when the bank is full or on shore power, gas in reserve when the sun is missing. Redundancy beats elegance here.

    Cold storage: refrigeration is an electrical item

    A 12 V compressor fridge draws 30 to 60 Ah/day in summer — often the van's biggest item after heating. Three levers act before you even change the appliance:

    • Placement — a fridge pressed against a south-facing wall runs constantly. A few centimetres of air gap and rear venting do more than a more powerful compressor.
    • Format — a top-opening unit retains cold at each opening, unlike a vertical door that dumps it. That is a permanent gain, not a setting.
    • Setpoint — dropping the temperature needlessly doubles consumption fast. Set it to preserve, not to freeze, unless you genuinely need to.

    And the thermoelectric cooler remains the classic false friend: cheap, it draws continuously for a modest temperature differential — acceptable running off the alternator while driving, ruinous at a wild camp.

    Resupply: stores that don't depend on the cold

    Real food autonomy is measured by how many days you can hold out if the fridge stops. Hence the simple rule: three days of food that needs neither refrigeration nor long cooking — precooked pulses, tinned goods, starches, nuts.

    The rest is a matter of rotation: these stores are not a museum, they get eaten and replaced along with ordinary shopping. An emergency stock you never touch expires precisely on the day it was meant to serve.

    One last point, often overlooked: cooking water. Boiling pasta or rice uses drinking water that the water balance has to account for. On a long stay, favouring cooking methods that don't require draining changes the arithmetic more than you would expect.

The real dividing line separates compression (which regulates to a setpoint and stops once reached) from thermoelectric (which draws continuously for a limited differential against ambient).     Is induction viable without lithium?

    In practice, no. The roughly 2 kW draw requires a bank able to deliver high current without voltage sag, which lead-acid handles poorly and pays for in lifespan. On an existing lead-acid installation, gas remains the coherent answer.

    How much gas for a month?

    The usual order of magnitude for two people cooking daily is around one 6 kg bottle per month, cooking alone. That figure climbs fast if gas also serves hot water or supplementary heating — two uses to be counted separately, not added by guesswork.
