1. The legal framework: parking vs. wild camping
The most common confusion among vanlifers is mixing up parking and camping. French law draws a clear distinction between the two.
Parking = legal
An approved vehicle (VASP or VP registration) has the right to park in any public parking space, exactly like a car. The Code de la route (art. R417-1 onwards) makes no distinction between a camper van and an ordinary vehicle.
Wild camping = prohibited
Set out an awning, a table, levelling chocks or a canopy? You're now camping. That is prohibited outside designated sites under articles R111-32 to R111-35 of the Code de l'urbanisme. The line is drawn by any set-up outside the vehicle.
In short: the golden rule
- Staying inside the vehicle = legal parking
- Don't set anything up outside the vehicle
- Any outdoor gear (table, awning, chocks) = camping
- Camping outside a designated site = an offence
2. Where can you legally park a van?
France has an excellent network of service areas and car parks open to converted vehicles.
🅿️ Motorhome service areas (5,200+ in France)
The densest network in Europe. Water, waste disposal, electricity (sometimes). Free up to €15/night. Listed on Park4Night, Caramaps and CamperContact.
🏙️ Public car parks
Legal unless a municipal bylaw says otherwise. Check: maximum height sign (often 1.90 m underground), motorhome ban sign, maximum duration (generally 7 consecutive days max — art. R417-12).
🛣️ Motorway service areas
Free parking but limited to 24h. Variable safety. Avoid isolated areas at night. Prefer areas with a petrol station and a restaurant.
🏡 Private property
With the owner's consent, no restrictions. The HomeCamper and Gamping platforms connect owners and vanlifers. From €5 to €25/night.
⛺ Campsites
The most comfortable option: showers, electricity, Wi-Fi. From €12 to €35/night depending on the season. Booking advised in July-August on the coast.
3. Municipal bylaws: the real trap
Local councils have the power to restrict parking by municipal bylaw (arrêté municipal). It's the number one cause of tickets for vanlifers.
How does it work?
The mayor can issue a bylaw limiting or banning the parking of vehicles over 3.5 t, over 2 m tall, or of "converted vehicles" on certain roads or zones. These bylaws must be posted and signposted (signs).
In practice, many tourist towns issue seasonal bylaws (June-September) targeting motorhomes and vans specifically.

⚠️ ZFE: the Low Emission Zone trap
Since 2025, 11 French metropolitan areas apply Crit'Air restrictions. A Euro 4 diesel van (2006-2010) gets a Crit'Air 3 sticker and may be banned from driving in the city centre. 🚨 Impoundment
In the event of abusive parking (> 7 consecutive days in the same spot) or repeated wild camping, the vehicle may be impounded. Average cost: €150 towing fee + €20/day of storage. Recovery within 48h is mandatory.
6. The vanlifer's 10 golden rules for staying low-key
Arrive late (after 8 pm), leave early (before 9 am). Discretion is your best ally.
NEVER set out outdoor furniture: table, chair, awning, chocks = camping = a ticket.
Keep your curtains/blackouts shut. Visible interior light = a neighbour's complaint.
No outdoor generator. Noise = police = a fine.
Empty your grey water at the proper service areas. Never in nature, never in a gutter.
Leave the spot cleaner than you found it. Take your rubbish and other people's.
Don't stay more than 2 nights in the same spot (even if the law allows 7 days).
