Motorhome aires in France: 2026 prices and services

By Azimut AI · · Our editorial policy

France has more than 6,000 official motorhome aires according to specialist guides, about 40% of them free. But "aire" can mean three different things, and mistaking a service area for an overnight aire is the first source of bad surprises. Here is how they work, what they cost, and how to find them.

Service aire, overnight aire, mixed aire

    • • Service aire (aire de service) — a service point to empty grey water and the cassette and refill fresh water. Free or €2 to €5 a token. You stay as long as the service takes, an hour or two at most.
    • • Overnight aire (aire de stationnement or aire d'étape) — spaces to spend the night: free in many villages, €5 to €15 a night on a paid municipal aire, €8 to €25 on a private one. The maximum stay is posted, usually 24, 48 or 72 hours.
    • • Mixed aire — both at once, and now the most common format.

Before settling in for the night, read the sign at the entrance: it says whether overnight stays are allowed, the maximum stay and how to pay.

Paying for and using a service point

The most common service points take tokens (jetons) sold at the town hall, the tourist office or a nearby shop — the address is often shown on the terminal. Newer ones accept bank cards or payment by app. Keep some coins and a spare token: a broken terminal or a shop closed on Sunday comes up quickly.

The order that avoids trouble: grey water over the drain grid, cassette into the black-water inlet, rinse, then fill fresh water with your own hose from the drinking-water tap. Never fill your tank from the cassette-rinse tap. Volumes and toilet options are covered in our guide to grey water and toilets.

How many days before the next dump station? Our calculator works it out from your fresh and grey water tanks, your cassette and your battery.

In winter many municipal aires turn the water off to prevent freezing: check an app before counting on it.

    The networks worth knowing

    • • Camping-Car Park — more than 800 destinations and nearly 24,000 pitches open all year, with 225 new aires and campsites planned for 2026. Pitches are growing from 8 × 5 m to 10 × 6 m, and electricity starts at 6 A (about 1,380 W). Expect €12 to €18 a night; access and payment go through the network's card or app.
    • • France Passion — 2,200 hosts in 2026: 1,000 farmers, 800 winegrowers and 400 craftspeople and farm inns. The guide costs €35.90; nights with hosts are then free. One night, self-contained, respecting the farm or estate: it is an invitation, not an aire.
    • • Campsites — off season, many welcome motorhomes for a night or just for services; the answer when municipal aires have shut their water.

Finding an aire: apps and guides

PDF lists go out of date fast: an app with offline maps is more reliable. The most used are Park4Night (over 250,000 places across Europe), Caramaps, Campercontact, and the Camping-Car Park and France Passion apps. On paper, the Guide officiel des aires de services comes out every year.

Read recent reviews before you set off: they flag broken terminals, changed prices and new bans. Parking rules outside aires are covered in our legal guide to camper van parking in France.

    The rules on an aire

    • • An aire is a car park, not a campsite: no awning, table or chairs outside unless the aire's rules allow it.
    • • Respect the posted maximum stay and pay before the night: checks happen early in the morning.
    • • Never empty grey water on the ground, even on a free aire.
    • • Large aires sometimes limit vehicle length: check before arriving with more than 8 m.
    • • On the coast in summer, arrive before 5 pm: free aires fill up by evening.

    Famous sites: the Mont-Saint-Michel example

At Mont-Saint-Michel, motorhomes under 8 m park in the P8 car park, on a ticket renewed every 24 hours. Parking overnight is allowed, but the car park is not accommodation: no water, no electricity, and staying there is forbidden. The free "Le Passeur" shuttle runs to the Mont all year. To sleep, the tourist office points to nearby aires and campsites.

The lesson holds for most major sites: motorhome parking is for visiting, not for the night. Find the nearest aire before you arrive. And if your route crosses a low-emission zone, read our 2026 rules for driving a motorhome in France.

    Key takeaways

    • More than 6,000 official aires in France, about 40% of them free.
    • Service aire = empty and fill; overnight aire = sleep; a mixed aire does both. The entrance sign decides.
    • A night: €0–15 municipal, €12–18 with Camping-Car Park, €8–25 private; services: a €2–5 token.
    • France Passion: 2,200 hosts in 2026, guide at €35.90, free nights.
    • At Mont-Saint-Michel as at most major sites, motorhome parking is for visiting, not for sleeping.

    FAQ

Can you sleep on a service aire?

Only if it is a mixed aire that allows overnight stays: the entrance sign says so. A service-only aire is for emptying and filling, not for the night.

How much does a night on a motorhome aire cost?

From €0 on a free municipal aire to €5–15 on a paid municipal one, €12–18 on the Camping-Car Park network and €8–25 on a private aire. Services alone often cost a €2–5 token.

Where do you buy service-point tokens?

At the town hall, the tourist office or a nearby shop; the address is often shown on the terminal. Newer terminals take bank cards or an app.

Is there a PDF list of motorhome aires in France?

Lists exist, but they date quickly. An app with offline maps (Park4Night, Caramaps, Campercontact) stays more current; on paper, the Guide officiel des aires de services comes out every year.

    Are aires open in winter?

The parking often is; the water not always: many municipal aires turn it off to prevent freezing. Check in an app, or aim for a campsite open all year.
