Motorhome in Italy: aree di sosta, ZTL and rules 2026

By Azimut AI · · Our editorial policy

Italy's Highway Code treats a motorhome like any other vehicle: parked where a car may park, it is parked, not camping. The real traps lie elsewhere: camera-enforced ZTLs in historic centres, the striped sign required on a bike rack, the toll class. Here are the rules, the aires and the tools, checked in October 2026.

    art. 185

the text that separates parking from camping

    €83–332

the fine per unauthorised ZTL entry

    1.30 m

    Sosta or campeggio: article 185

Article 185 of the Codice della Strada sets the rule: where parking is allowed, a motorhome's parking is not camping as long as the vehicle touches the ground only through its wheels, releases nothing of its own (engine aside) and does not occupy the road beyond its outline. Sleeping aboard a correctly parked motorhome is therefore allowed.

    • • Discharges: emptying fresh water, grey water or organic waste anywhere other than the facilities provided is banned and carries an administrative fine (roughly €84 to €335 under the current scale).
    • • Paid car parks: councils may charge motorhomes a rate up to 50% higher than cars.
    • • Jacks, awning, chairs outside: once you spill over, you are camping — allowed only on a campsite or an aire that permits it.

What a council can (and cannot) ban

Interior Ministry circular no. 277 of 14 January 2008 recalls that motorhomes follow the same traffic rules as other vehicles (articles 6 and 7 of the code): an ordinance banning them from a car park open to vehicles of the same size is unlawful, and several have been struck down by the courts.

On the ground, "divieto di sosta autocaravan" signs still exist. Respect them on the spot and challenge later if needed: arguing with an officer does not change the ticket. Size, height and weight limits always remain valid, since they apply to every vehicle.

    ZTL: the camera trap

Most historic centres are limited traffic zones (ZTL), reserved for residents and permit holders. You enter through camera gates: when the sign reads "Varco attivo", entry is forbidden and the plate is photographed.

    • • Fine: €83 to €332 per offence (art. 7, para. 14 of the code).
    • • Since the code reform in force on 14 December 2024 (Law 177/2024), several camera-recorded passages through the same ZTL on the same day give a single fine per day. Two different ZTLs, or two days, give two.
    • • Foreign plates: the fine arrives by post, sometimes months later, thanks to information sharing between EU countries.

The fix is simple: park on an aire or a car park on the outskirts and go in on foot or by bus. Satnavs do not always know ZTLs or their hours.

    Aree di sosta: Italy's network

Aree di sosta attrezzate are aires reserved for motorhomes, with a camper service to empty tanks and fill up with water. The network is growing: the Tourism Ministry has released €25.7 million for 4,400 new pitches in 170 municipalities, mainly towns of under 20,000 inhabitants.

    • • Municipal aires — sometimes free, often paid in season.
    • • Private aires and "camper stops" — electricity, showers; prices rise in August on the coast, with electricity and tourist tax sometimes extra.
    • • Agricamper Italia — with an annual subscription, a night with farmers, winemakers and craftspeople, on the France Passion model.

At the service point, the right order and the volumes to plan for are in our guide to grey water and toilets.

On the road: tolls, speeds, bike racks, winter

    • • Tolls — two-axle vehicles pay class A up to 1.30 m high above the front axle and class B above it: that covers most motorhomes.
    • • Speeds (art. 142) — up to 3.5 t, like a car: 130 km/h on motorways, 110 on dual carriageways, 90 outside built-up areas; above 3.5 t: 100 km/h on motorways and 80 outside built-up areas.
    • • Bike racks and overhanging loads (art. 164) — any load sticking out at the rear must carry a 50 × 50 cm reflective panel with red and white stripes, towbar-mounted racks included. Without it: a fine (from about €87) and you may not continue.
    • • Winter — from 15 November to 15 April, winter tyres or chains on board on roads where the obligation is signposted, motorhomes included; some mountain regions extend it.

Finding an aire: apps and good practice

Italy's reference site is CamperOnline (aire listings and forum); Park4Night, Campercontact and Caramaps also cover the whole country, with offline maps. Read recent reviews: they flag closed aires, broken service points and nearby ZTLs.

    • • Visiting an art city: aire on the outskirts + bus, never the motorhome towards the centre.
    • • Parked for the night outside an aire: wheels only on the ground, nothing outside.
    • • Fit the 50 × 50 sign before the border if you carry a bike rack.

If you head home through France, our French aires and French motorhome rules guides follow the same format.

    Key takeaways

    • Article 185: parked, wheels only on the ground, with no discharge or overhang, a motorhome is parked — not camping.
    • A council cannot close to motorhomes a car park open to vehicles of the same size (circular no. 277 of 2008).
    • ZTL: €83 to €332 per offence, one fine per day per ZTL since December 2024; park on the outskirts.
    • Tolls: class B above 1.30 m at the front axle; above 3.5 t, 100 km/h on motorways.
    • Bike rack: 50 × 50 red-and-white sign mandatory; from 15 November to 15 April, winter tyres or chains where signposted.

    FAQ

Can you sleep in a parked motorhome in Italy?

Yes: under article 185 of the Highway Code, a motorhome's parking is not camping as long as it touches the ground only through its wheels, releases nothing and stays within its outline.

How much is a ZTL fine in Italy?

€83 to €332 per offence. Since 14 December 2024, several camera-recorded passages through the same ZTL on the same day give a single fine; two different ZTLs give two.

Can an Italian town ban motorhomes?

Not from a car park open to vehicles of the same size: circular no. 277 of 2008 holds such ordinances unlawful. The signs still exist, though: respect them on the spot and challenge later.

Which toll class does a motorhome pay in Italy?

Class B once the height above the front axle exceeds 1.30 m, which is the case for most motorhomes; class A below that.

Is the striped sign mandatory on a bike rack in Italy?

Yes: any load overhanging at the rear must carry a 50 × 50 cm reflective panel with red and white stripes (article 164), including on a towbar bike rack.
